Disciplinary identity and research
Schools and departments | Disciplinary identity and research
The West Campus supports disciplines with complementary methods. Computer science develops algorithms and systems; engineering studies matter, forces and energy; information science treats signals and connected devices; life sciences addresses biological processes; nuclear science links fundamental phenomena to technological systems; and microelectronics examines circuits and devices. Management education adds analysis of institutions, organizations and decisions. These connections make research problems across the boundaries of schools more accessible.
Distinct disciplinary methods across the university
The academic areas represented on and around West Campus share methods but address different problems. Engineering Science covers mechanics and thermal/energy systems; Information Science treats signals and automation; Computer Science addresses algorithms and intelligent computing; Life Sciences studies biological systems.
Nuclear Science and Microelectronics bring specialized instrumentation and devices, while Management connects quantitative analysis to organizations and decisions.
